Use OAuth when a remote MCP client supports browser sign-in and cannot configure custom authorization headers. The user signs in to ScreenshotAPI and reviews access before the client can act on their account.

Connect a compatible client

  1. Add https://api.screenshotapi.tech/mcp as a remote Streamable HTTP MCP server.
  2. Choose OAuth authentication in your client.
  3. Follow its browser sign-in and confirm that the client identity is the one you intended to connect.
  4. Review and approve the requested capture and job permissions.
  5. Ask the agent to estimate a capture first, then submit and track it.
OAuth access uses the signed-in account’s credits and limits. Consent does not create free or unlimited usage.

Client requirements

The authorization server publishes its endpoints at https://clerk.app.screenshotapi.tech/.well-known/oauth-authorization-server. Use discovery instead of hardcoding authorization and token endpoint paths. Let the client’s OAuth library manage state, PKCE, token storage, expiration, and refresh. Legacy dynamic client registration is disabled. A client that requires DCR and cannot use CIMD needs a separately registered application; otherwise use the custom-header API-key connection.

Authorization and ownership

The API checks token validity, revocation, expiration, resource audience, and the required scope. Tokens issued for another resource are rejected. Capture and job access stays tied to the signed-in account and OAuth client. A different client does not automatically gain access to another client’s jobs. Store tokens in your client’s credential store, outside prompts, source files, and browser application code. Disconnecting a local client alone might only remove its saved connection; revoke its granted access to stop a compromised token.

Troubleshoot sign-in

  • Registration is unsupported: check CIMD support or use a registered client. DCR is not enabled.
  • 401 unauthorized: reconnect or refresh using the client. Check the resource parameter, token expiration, and revocation.
  • 403 forbidden: reconnect with the required scope and review the user’s consent.
  • Insufficient credits: use the billing console to upgrade or top up.
The production service publishes OAuth discovery and enforces token checks. Client compatibility varies; test your chosen client’s consent and refresh flow before depending on unattended execution.
